The 4.5 Litre Bentley is widely regarded as the best all-round sports car of its day. Rugged, reliable, and fast, the model dominated international motorsport for a decade. Legendary victories and tales of heroic success at Le Mans and other events in the 1920's are part of motorsport history, and the marque will forever be associated with the race track.

In subsequent decades the cars were frequently seen at the front of the grid at club races and international rallies. Spares, restoration experts, and general support for the marque has always been readily available to help the enthusiasts maintain and use their cars. No other marque has the level of support that the Vintage Bentley world provides.

Some cars, as originally supplied, were clothed with formal coachwork, such as a saloon or limousine. Many cars fell into disrepair, providing the enthusiast with and ideal opportunity to build a capable sports car using a 4.5 Litre chassis and mating it to a new sports body. The favourite style, of course, is the Birkin Le Mans design.

PL 3489 is just such a car, and was originally supplied by the works in July 1929 to the first owner C.B. Shackleton, who ordered the car with a Coupe body by Rippon. Falling into disrepair it was rescued and fitted at one stage in the 1950's with a diesel engine! But values have changed since then and the car now has a correct 4.5 Litre engine, though not its original.

The recent restoration and mechanical rebuild has been carried out to the highest standards and specification. The aim was to produce a car with international racing and rallies in mind. All the best mechanical upgrades have been incorporated. The list includes full flow lubrication with a modern oil filter, shell bearings, new crank, rods and rockers. The car is fitted with overdrive and an alternator. It has an uprated differential and stronger half shafts. The body is absolutely superb with all the Birkin Le Mans style features that making it an exciting 4.5 Litre Bentley Le Mans.
